Steele’s sculptures explore the poetry found in the built world—bridges, dams, and highways become symbols of resilience, connection, and ambition. Through his art, he examines how our physical constructions mirror the “technologies of the self,” revealing the ways we strive to overcome distance, adversity, and limitation. His residency invites visitors to experience the beauty of labor and intention that exists within the structures that hold us together—both literally and metaphorically. During High Point Market, Steele’s sculptural works were featured throughout the Bernhardt showroom, offering a striking dialogue between art and design. His pieces invited visitors to pause within the flow of the showroom, reflecting on the strength and intention behind both human-made structures and finely crafted furnishings. Through this thoughtful juxtaposition, Steele’s residency underscored Bernhardt’s ongoing commitment to creativity, craftsmanship, and the deeper narratives that connect people to design.  | | --- | --- |    VIRTUAL TOUR ---       ---   - [![Matthew Steele joined Bernhardt as the Fall 2025 Artist in Residence, exploring the resilience within the structures that connect us.](https://blog.bernhardt.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Bernhardt%20Curated/Happenings/Fall%202025%20Artist%20in%20Residence/Matthew_Steele_2.jpg?width=1200&length=1200&name=Matthew_Steele_2.jpg) Hover message Continuum, 2019 Heart pine, copper rod, and 23 gauge nails 46 x 46 x 13 inches  ](https://blog.bernhardt.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Bernhardt%20Curated/Happenings/Fall%202025%20Artist%20in%20Residence/Matthew_Steele_2.jpg?width=1200&length=1200&name=Matthew_Steele_2.jpg) - [![Matthew Steele joined Bernhardt as the Fall 2025 Artist in Residence, exploring the resilience within the structures that connect us.](https://blog.bernhardt.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Bernhardt%20Curated/Happenings/Fall%202025%20Artist%20in%20Residence/Matthew_Steele_4.jpg?width=1200&length=1200&name=Matthew_Steele_4.jpg) Hover message Retrograde, 2025 Peruvian walnut, copper rod, 23-gauge nails 77 x 77 x 7 inches](https://blog.bernhardt.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Bernhardt%20Curated/Happenings/Fall%202025%20Artist%20in%20Residence/Matthew_Steele_4.jpg?width=1200&length=1200&name=Matthew_Steele_4.jpg) - [![Matthew Steele joined Bernhardt as the Fall 2025 Artist in Residence, exploring the resilience within the structures that connect us.](https://blog.bernhardt.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Bernhardt%20Curated/Happenings/Fall%202025%20Artist%20in%20Residence/Matthew_Steele_9.jpg?width=1200&length=1200&name=Matthew_Steele_9.jpg) Hover message Drift / Harbor, 2025 Driftwood, walnut, 23-gauge nails 18 x 43 x 12 inches](https://blog.bernhardt.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Bernhardt%20Curated/Happenings/Fall%202025%20Artist%20in%20Residence/Matthew_Steele_9.jpg?width=1200&length=1200&name=Matthew_Steele_9.jpg) - [![Matthew Steele joined Bernhardt as the Fall 2025 Artist in Residence, exploring the resilience within the structures that connect us.](https://blog.bernhardt.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Bernhardt%20Curated/Happenings/Fall%202025%20Artist%20in%20Residence/Matthew_Steele_5.jpg?width=1200&length=1200&name=Matthew_Steele_5.jpg) Hover message Rowlock Arch No.1, 2024 Peruvian walnut, copper rod, 23-gauge nails 29 x 73 x 4 inches](https://blog.bernhardt.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Bernhardt%20Curated/Happenings/Fall%202025%20Artist%20in%20Residence/Matthew_Steele_5.jpg?width=1200&length=1200&name=Matthew_Steele_5.jpg) - [![Matthew Steele joined Bernhardt as the Fall 2025 Artist in Residence, exploring the resilience within the structures that connect us.](https://blog.bernhardt.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Bernhardt%20Curated/Happenings/Fall%202025%20Artist%20in%20Residence/Matthew_Steele_8.jpg?width=1200&length=1200&name=Matthew_Steele_8.jpg) Hover message Drift / Harbor, 2025 Driftwood, walnut, 23-gauge nails 18 x 43 x 12 inches](https://blog.bernhardt.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Bernhardt%20Curated/Happenings/Fall%202025%20Artist%20in%20Residence/Matthew_Steele_8.jpg?width=1200&length=1200&name=Matthew_Steele_8.jpg) - [![Matthew Steele joined Bernhardt as the Fall 2025 Artist in Residence, exploring the resilience within the structures that connect us.](https://blog.bernhardt.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Bernhardt%20Curated/Happenings/Fall%202025%20Artist%20in%20Residence/Matthew_Steele_7.jpg?width=1200&length=1200&name=Matthew_Steele_7.jpg) Bulwark, 2025 Peruvian walnut, 23-gauge nails 48 x 92 x 5 inches](https://blog.bernhardt.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Bernhardt%20Curated/Happenings/Fall%202025%20Artist%20in%20Residence/Matthew_Steele_7.jpg?width=1200&length=1200&name=Matthew_Steele_7.jpg)     > [          View this post on Instagram                      ](https://www.instagram.com/reel/DQKZ8xWkcs7/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=loading) > > [A post shared by Bernhardt Furniture (@bernhardtfurniture)](https://www.instagram.com/reel/DQKZ8xWkcs7/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=loading)   > [          View this post on Instagram                      ](https://www.instagram.com/p/DQPZO3-kWBE/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=loading) > > [A post shared by MATTHEW STEELE (@mtsteele)](https://www.instagram.com/p/DQPZO3-kWBE/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=loading) [LEARN MORE ABOUT MATTHEW STEELE](http://www.mtsteele.com)     --- Follow us on ## Sign Up For Bernhardt News Discover everything Bernhardt, from styling inspiration and new product launches to market news and events.
